Applicants must satisfy the General Entry Requirements for admission, namely, the Matriculation Certificate and Secondary Education Certificate passes at Grade 5 or better in Maltese, English Language and Mathematics.

Applicants may also be admitted in terms of the 'maturity (adult learners) clause'. Such applicants are required to sit for an English Proficiency Test to be held in September 2024. Successful applicants will then be required to sit for an interview sometime during the same month. Such applicants shall be exempted from sitting for the proficiency test if they are in possession of a pass at SEC level English at Grade 3 or better or equivalent.

Applicants in possession of the Diploma in Social Studies (Occupational Health and Safety) of this University with an average mark of 60% or over, or a comparable qualification in an area related to Occupational Health and Safety, or who have obtained ECTS credits for study-units considered by the Board of Studies to be equivalent to those in the programme of study, may also be admitted to the Course. Subject to the provisions of the Principal Regulations, such applicants may be allowed by the Board of Studies to transfer these credits to the Course, provided that:

the number of credits so transferred shall not exceed 60 ECTS credits and
they may be required to follow a programme of study as approved by the Board of Studies.

As organisations strive to adapt to the ever-developing topic of occupational health and safety, the need for qualified and skilled professionals in the area increases. This course aims to reflect the development of this area of specialisation. An inter-disciplinary approach towards occupational health and safety shall be adopted, including perspectives from: occupational safety; health and safety law; occupational hygiene; occupational health; management; sociology; occupational psychology; ergonomics; statistics; epidemiology; toxicology; environmental health; health and safety management; workplace design; health promotion and research. The curriculum will provide you with the knowledge and necessary skills to enable you to work in the capacity of an occupational health and safety professional. The programme covers the following themes: Health and safety law; Occupational safety; Occupational health and hygiene; Risk assessment and control; Occupational psychology, ergonomics (human factors) and workplace design; Health and safety management; Practical application and professional development; and Research.

Communication and Academic Skills Programme

The communication and academic skills programme complements students’ main course of study. It introduces them to writing and presenting as situated within academic contexts sensitive to specific disciplines and develops their competences for future careers.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Bachelor in Occupational Health and Safety (Honours) - B. OHS(Hons) - under the auspices of the Centre for Labour Studies.

By the end of the course, you will:

Gain knowledge about the development, content and interpretation of local and European legislation pertaining to occupational health and safety; evaluate the impact of legislation, regulation, and codes of practice.
Comprehend the principles of good housekeeping; learn how to identify and tackle the dangerous parts of machines, tools, equipment and systems; discuss the principles of working within a confined space; evaluate personal protective equipment; learn health and safety signage; analyse the principles of chemical, transport, radiation and electrical safety.
Examine the collaboration of the multi-disciplinary team in recognising hazards to health; discuss the impact of shift work on health; examine the themes of sickness absence, presenteeism, work incapacity, impairment and disability; explore the impact of various industries on worker health; study the implications of self-employment on occupational health.
valuate the meaning and use of risk assessment; explore themes such as the perception, employee involvement and acceptability of risk assessment; learn the general approaches and principles to the estimation of risk.
explore the role of psychology in health and safety practice; learn the psychological theories underpinning key concepts such as stress, perception, job satisfaction, motivation and how to tackle them within the workplace. gain knowledge about human information processing, learning and memory and the application of these to occupational wellness and performance.
Learn to apply key health and safety concepts to Maltese workplaces; explore the application of health and safety principles within different genders, ethnicities, age groups and disabilities.
